The “Swedish Aeroplane Limited” (SAAB) founded in 1937 has its headquarters in Linköping. The “SAAB” that was renamed “Saab” around 1950 originally manufactured airplanes, and started automobile manufacturing automobiles in the late 1940s. The Saab Automobile division based in Trollhättan introduced its first car the Saab 92001 on 10 June 1947. It has a reputation for giving safe and reliable automobiles and is undoubtedly one of the most popular automobile manufacturers. In December 1989, General Motors had bought 50% of saab‘s automobile division for US $600 million.

“New generation” Saab 900 were launched in 1994 and because of its immense popularity and high sales, the company declared a profit in 1995 for the first time in seven years. Some of its current models are the Saab 9-3 (1998 – present) Saab 9-3X (2009) Saab 9-5 (1997–present), etc. High priority is given to safety standards and all the modern Saabs barring a few have a floor-mounted ignition as saab believes this is a far more safer position in case of an accident. It strives to give its customers a car that causes minimum harm. An interesting common feature of Saab cars is that the number 9 is used in all the model numbers.
